Expert Panel on Military & Veterans Health

The Expert Panel on Military & Veterans Health identifies issues associated with the provision of health care to veterans, and develops policy recommendations for health policy, health education and best practices based on the synthesis of scientific findings and scholarship relevant to military and veteran issues.

• Policy Dialogue: Healthcare Systems Post-COVID: Exploring Reforms & Policy Implications (Hosted in December 2021)

  Hosted by the Building Health Care System Excellence Expert Panel in Collaboration with the Expert Panels on Palliative and End of Life Care; Military and Veterans Health; and Acute and Critical Care, this dialogue featured thought-provoking discussion about policy issues associated with the complexity of healthcare systems and their resulting burdens through the lens of the COVID-19 pandemic. Leading experts discussed the innovations implemented during the pandemic as well as the policy initiatives introduced to address health care solutions needed in the post-pandemic world.

• Policy Brief: Military sexual trauma (July-August 2019)
• Position statement: The American Academy of Nursing opposes prevention and limitation of transgender individuals from serving in the United States military (September-October 2018) 
• Policy Brief: "Have you ever served in the Military?" campaign in partnership with the Joining Forces Initiative. Nursing Outlook 61 (September 2013) 375–376.
• The Academy was pleased to send a letter to the director of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology in the US Department of Health and Human Services urging inclusion of military service criteria in electronic health records to focus on the unique needs and strengths of Americans who have served in the Armed Forces and their families.
