Happy New Year Academy Fellows!

The American Academy of Nursing is an organization of continual renewal. This past Fall, as we do every year, we welcomed new Fellows, while encouraging our current Fellows to become more engaged in the Academy’s work through Expert Panels, Committees, and Task Forces. While we sadly said goodbye to many of nursing’s greats, including Hazel Johnson-Brown, Bernadine Healy, and Joyce C. Clifford, we welcomed 143 Fellows to the Academy; Fellows that are already making significant contributions in the nursing world; Fellows whose influence we only expect to grow with the support of the Fellowship.

I’d like to draw your attention to one major item. You should know that there was an inconsistency in the application form for Fellow nomination in which the term “contribution to the United States” was incorrectly inserted. This is inconsistent with the Academy bylaws which state: “Academy Fellows are individuals who have been admitted into Fellowship based on their outstanding contributions to nursing and/or health care and their significant potential for continuing contributions to nursing, health care and the Academy.” Thus, the application form has been revised and all applications will be reviewed and addressed, based solely on the bylaws requirement. The deadline for all applications has been extended by one week to February 13, 2012.

Under Catherine Gilliss’ leadership the Academy revised the strategic plan, approved new Bylaws, redefined its expectations of Expert Panel work and updated clinical and financial outcome data of Raise the Voice Edge Runners. Earlier this week the Academy launched its new website (www.AANnet.org) and database, which looks to be a great resource for Fellow interaction and engagement. And, due to the diligence of Cheryl G. Sullivan, CEO, and the staff, we managed to do all of this (and more) without raising dues.

In 2011, the former Annual Fund was given a facelift. Appropriately renamed after one of the founding members and Living Legend, as well as the first Board President, The Rheba deTornyay Development Fund, is positioned to become a viable presence within the Academy. The support of the Rheba de Tornyay Fund and President’s Circle was unprecedented. Thirty-two individual donations, at a $1,000+ donation, qualified the donors for President’s Circle recognition. And, the average gift increased by 120%! All unrestricted contributions from our Fellows support Fellow engagement like Raise the Voice Critical Conversations, the design and upkeep of our database and website, and the Academy’s participation in strategic partnerships. I encourage each of you to remember the Academy in your 2012 annual giving at a level that is meaningful to you and help us exceed our 2011 goal of $120,000.

I also wanted to include a final reminder to Expert Panel co-chairs about the Expert Panel Annual Action Plans that are due January 16th. Please make sure to send them directly to Jocelyn Cunic ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and to copy your Board and Staff Liaisons.

I am excited about the opportunities for the Academy in 2012 and confident of our ability to exert influence in improving the health of the public while highlighting nursing’s extraordinary contributions.

Sincerely,

Joanne Signature

Greetings from the CEO

Dear Fellows,

Happy 2012! As I sit back and reflect on 2011, I cannot help but feel an immense amount of pride for the advancements the American Academy of Nursing has taken. The Fellows have become more engaged, the staff reinvigorated, and technology upgraded, all of which makes the Academy better poised to influence health care policy.

The Academy welcomes J Taylor Harden, PhD, RN, FAAN this week as the new BAGNC Program Administrator. Dr. Harden is uniquely qualified to ensure the continued success of BAGNC. As we welcome her, we celebrate the numerous accomplishments of Pat Archbold under whose leadership there are 177 BAGNC alumni including 12 who are now Fellows in the Academy. The countless older adults who are well cared by providers skilled in gerontological health are the beneficiaries of Pat’s vision, wisdom, and tireless dedication. The 38th Annual Meeting & Conference was an enormous success. Thank you to those Fellows who attended and to the planning committee, Board of Directors, and staff for ensuing that the conference went off without a hitch. Through the hard work of the Planning Committee, particularly co-chairs Judith Baggs, Colleen Goode and Ruth Kleinpell, and Academy staff, all budget goals were met, and many surpassed, including those categories of registrations, sponsorships and advertising. During the 3 days, the Academy honored 5 new Living Legends, 143 new Fellows, and welcomed a record number of 863 attendees to the conference and 1277 individuals to the Induction Ceremony. We were privileged to have the conference program kicked off by US Surgeon General Regina Benjamin and ended on a high note with Harvard Professor and author of the Nurse’s Health Study, Dr Walter Willett, who were both met with rave reviews on their presentations. Woven into the agenda was the biennial Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science Special Topics Meeting and the Academy’s Kick-Off Pre-Conference (thanks to the Academy’s Expert Panel on Quality Health Care, lead by Co-Chairs Gerri Lamb and Nancy Donaldson). From engaging sessions to expert panel meetings, the conference provides the Academy’s Fellows networking and strategizing sessions hard to find elsewhere. The Academy also thanks the pool of over 100 Volunteers who offered to help register people, direct people, collect tickets, and sell (and wrap!) at the Academy Shoppes. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Please note that in order to provide additional time for policy discussions and Fellow meetings, the 2012 conference Transforming Health Care: Driving Policy will begin Thursday afternoon, October 11, 2012, at 2pm, after the pre-conference that morning by the Emerging and Infectious Diseases and Global Health Expert Panels.

In addition to the annual meeting and conference this fall, on October 7th the Academy hosted a Raise the Voice Critical Conversation entitled Advanced Care Planning and Decision Making: Models that Work at the Kaiser Family Foundation in Washington, DC. This critical conversation featuring two distinguished panels was broadcast live over the web. It was well attended with members from the Raise the Voice Advisory Council, representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Catholic Health Association, HRSA, ANA and Schools of Nursing including Yale, Columbia, and Adelphia, to name a few. More details about the event, including how to access the webcast and press kit are contained in the program updated below.

Our new website has launched and if you have not spent time updating your profile I encourage you to do so. Our database is only as good as the information you provide and Fellows rely on accurate the information for communication with each other. Additionally, if you do not receive regular emails from the Academy, at least 1 a month, please make sure to update your email address. With the cost of postage rising, we rely heavily on email to keep you informed on Academy news.

Finally, as our Fellows continue to receive increased exposure in the press, we want to make sure the Academy can recognize and document your achievements. Please include your affiliation with the Academy to reporters while providing quotes or background information.

I wish you all a happy, healthy, and safe 2012.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Signature

New Website

Late last week, the Academy launched a new website and member database. Website content has been updated and refined with a greater focus on the work of the Academy and Fellows. The member community allows for social networking and group work among Fellows. Additionally, Expert Panels and Committees now have their own committee areas where they can share documents and hold discussions. Below please find some helpful hints to make the most of our new website and member community:

  1. Make sure to update your profile. Additional attributes have been added that will be used to track the accomplishments of our Fellows.
  2. Review the “How to Guides” located on the Fellows Only homepage that you land on when logging into the community. These documents explain some of the features and how to best use them.
  3. Visit your committees and turn your email notifications on. You can access your committees by going to My Profile and then clicking on the My Features, Committees. If you believe you are missing a committee, taskforce, or expert panel (all found by clicking Committees), please contact Jocelyn Cunic at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
  4. Submit events to the Academy’s event calendar. We want this calendar to be robust and full of various Academy and public meetings/events/conferences/etc.
  5. Notify the staff if something does not work or seems amiss. You can do this through the Website Forum found in the Members Only Area or by emailing Kat Piscatelli at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
  6. Make connections and circles within the Social Community. These features work similarly to Facebook and Google+ and provide opportunities to network.
  7. Update bookmarks, as current bookmarks will not work. The homepage remains www.AANnet.org.

Communications

The Academy continues to disseminate organizational achievements and accomplishments of Fellows to a variety of interested audiences. Numerous new releases, features, and special calls to action have been posted on the website or broadcasted via email.

Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) Program Update

2011 Leadership Conference
More than 150 nurse scholars and leaders participated in the 2011 BAGNC Leadership Conference, held in Boston, November 16-18. This year’s conference focused on skills building for the Future of Nursing as outlined in the Institute of Medicine’s recent report.

One of the highlights of this year’s conference was participation by two of nursing’s greats in the Mary Starke Harper Distinguished Lectureship. Through Claire M. Fagin, PhD, RN, FAAN’s honest and probing conversation with Mathy Mezey, EdD, RN, FAAN, attendees were able to learn not only about Mathy Mezey’s enormous contributions to the field of gerontological nursing, but also about how she developed into the amazing leader that she became.

Marilyn Rantz Received Academy’s Nurse Leadership in Aging Award
Marilyn Rantz, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor and Helen E. Nahm Chair, at the University of Missouri’s Sinclair School of Nursing received the AAN 2011 Nurse Leadership in Aging Award on November 16th at the American Academy of Nursing’s Annual BAGNC Leadership Conference. This annual award recognizes leadership and significant achievements, contributions, productivity, competence, and mentorship in the field of aging. Dr. Rantz is one of the country’s leading experts on quality improvement interventions for residents in nursing homes; her aging in place program earned the American Academy of Nursing Edge Runner distinction in 2008.

Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS)

The Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science had a great 2011 year! The Special Topics Conference “Comparative Effectiveness and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research: Intersection of Nursing Science and Health Care Delivery” exceeded expectations in attendance with close to 350 registrants. Podium presentations from the keynote, Dr. Carolyn Clancy and others were praised by conference goers and the first ever digital e-poster session in the United States successfully generated excitement among nursing researchers. All speaker presentations, posters and photos from the event can be found on the Council’s website.

The success of 2011 has energized the 2012 conference planning committee chaired by Dr. Susan Gennaro (Boston College). The committee is currently working on the State of the Science Congress on Nursing Research (SOS) conference “Discovery through Innovation.” The 2010 10th Anniversary SOS conference was the largest in CANS’ history so expectations are high for 2012. Abstract collection opened in December and will be underway until February 15, 2012. To submit an abstract or to find out more information visit the Council’s website or the PosterGenius e-abstract site.

The Council is an open membership organization which means that the networking opportunity is wide, allowing researchers from around the world to come together and discuss trends in nursing and healthcare research. Members of CANS will be receiving a couple of new benefits this year including a gold membership lapel pin and a one-year subscription to our official journal Nursing Outlook. Other benefits to joining CANS include access to seed money grants, networking opportunities and discounted registration rates to our conferences. We have listened to our member’s suggestions and now offer both traditional membership registration and group registration. The new group registration allows nursing schools, Deans or even parents or alumni groups to give the gift of membership to students, young faculty members or established researchers who are not familiar with the Council. For both types of membership visit the Council’s membership page.

Raise the Voice Critical Conversation Review

On October 7, the Academy hosted a Raise the Voice Critical Conversation entitled Best Practices in Advanced Care Planning and Decision Making: Models that Work at the Kaiser Family Foundation in Washington, DC. This critical conversation engaged policymakers and other key stakeholders in a discussion of the policy options for promoting best practices in advance care planning and decision-making and encouraged journalists to report on these best practices.

The event opened with a welcome by Academy Fellow Virginia Tilden, DNSc, RN, FAAN, chair of the Academy’s Task Force that developed the policy brief “Advance Care Planning as an Urgent Public Health Concern,” followed by remarks by Bill Novelli, former CEO of AARP, reporting on research findings about public knowledge, perceptions and behavior related to advanced illness. Two panels followed.

The first panel was moderated by Jackie Judd, Raise the Voice Advisory Council Member and Kaiser Family Foundation Vice President for Communications. Panelists included NY Times blogger and oncology nurse Theresa Brown; Hartford Foundation Senior Program Officer, Amy Berman, who has been diagnosed with incurable breast cancer; and Manoj Jain, a physician who emphasizes the importance of patient and family involvement in advanced care planning and decision making.

The second panel, moderated by Jordan Rau, Correspondent of Kaiser Health News, included Fellow Cynda Rushton, an Academy Edge Runner, who discussed the Harriet Lane Compassionate Care Program, her innovative approach to improving end-of-life care for children; Suzanne Prevost, a geriatric nurse scholar at the University of Kentucky; Kate O’Malley, Senior Program Officer with the California HealthCare Foundation; and Joe Prevratil, CEO of the Archstone Foundation, who discussed how foundations are supporting the development of best practices and new models for advanced care planning and decision-making.

Sponsors included the Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation, the California Health Care Foundation, the John A. Hartford Foundation, the Archstone Foundation, and the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence.

If you would like to view a video of the critical conversation and/or would like access to the press kit materials provided to attendees, please visit the Raise the Voice Resources under the resource section on our website.
