September 1, 2011 Academy Encourages WHO to fill Chief Nurse Scientist vacancy Washington, DC (September 1, 2011) - Academy President Catherine Gilliss, DNSc, RN, FAAN, authored a letter today to Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of World Health Organization (WHO), expressing the American Academy of Nursing’s concern that the Chief Nurse Scientist position at the WHO has remained vacant after the retirement of Dr. Jean Yan. President Gilliss implored that “strong leadership within the WHO is critical in order to support the invaluable contributions of nurses and midwives across the globe in improving health care service delivery and to strengthen health systems so that nurses and midwives can practice within safe environments and to their fullest capacity.” The Academy’s Expert Panel on Global Nursing and Health, co-chaired by Marsha Fowler, PhD, RN, FAAN and Lynda Law Wilson, PhD, RN, FAAN, recognize that through their nursing and midwifery programs, the World Health Organization demonstrates their commitment to disseminating nursing and midwifery as viable solutions to improved health outcomes. The Academy reminds the WHO that it is imperative that a Chief Nurse Scientist be appointed to oversee these programs to ensure that the nursing and midwifery workforce continues to be strengthened. A PDF of the letter can be found here. ### The American Academy of Nursing (www.AANnet.org) anticipates and tracks national and international trends in health care, while addressing resulting issues of health care knowledge and policy. The Academy’s mission is to serve the public and nursing profession by advancing health policy and practice through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge. |
