Policy Update

Today is World No Tobacco Day, sponsored by the World Health Organization. The Academy affirms its commitment to healthy, smoke-free environments. The Academy issued a press release to urge smoking bans on college campuses and a companion policy brief. Read the release and brief »

The US Senate confirmed President Obama's nominee, Marilyn Tavenner, MHA, BSN, RN, as administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The Senate's vote was bipartisan and overwhelming.

Gail Melkus, EdD, C-NP, FAAN was appointed to the Medicare Evidence Development & Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC) as a voting member. MEDCAC was established to provide independent guidance and expert advice to CMS on specific clinical topics.

Jacquelyn Campbell, PhD, RN, FAAN, was recently appointed a member to the National Academies' Assessment of Resiliency and Prevention Programs for Mental and Behavioral Health in Service Members and their Families committee.

Fellow Achievements

Michael L. Evans, PhD, RN, FAAN, was reappointed for a second term as president of the American Nurses Credentialing Center. His term extends to June 2015.
Angela Barron McBride, PhD, RN, FAAN, was elected as an Honorary Fellow in the Provisional Hong Kong Academy of Nursing.
Margaret L. McClure, RN, EdD, FAAN, was highlighted in Nurse.com. She spoke about her career and work on developing the Magnet standards.
Sande Gracia Jones, PhD, ARNP, ACRN, ACNS-BC, FAAN, Rozzano Locsin, PhD, RN, FAAN, and John Lowe, PhD, RN, FAAN, were named to StateStat.org's 2013 list of Top 25 Nursing Professors in Florida.

Award Winning Fellows

Vivian M. Littlefield, PhD, RN, FAAN, was awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal by the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva for her exemplary service to the Red Cross.
Catherine Gilliss, PhD, RN, FAAN, received the Jane Norbeck Distinguished Alumnus Award by University California San Francisco School of Nursing.
Callista Roy, PhD, RN, FAAN, received the UCLA Award in Professional Achievement. Dr. Roy was named a Living Legend in 2007.
Kathy Oman, RN, PhD, FAEN, FAAN, will receive the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Colorado College of Nursing in September.
Christine Kennedy, RN, PhD, FAAN, received the 12th Health Literacy Research Award from the Institute for Healthcare Advancement for her "Picture This" study. The study was funded by the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at UCSF.

Ann Kurth, PhD, CNM, FAAN, one of nineteen nurse researchers who will be inducted into the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International’s (STTI) International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame

Elizabeth Capezuti, PhD, RN, FAAN, was awarded the 2013 NYU Distinguished Teaching Award.

Judith Haber, PhD, APRN, BC, FAAN, was awarded the 2013 NYU Alumni Award for Meritorious Service in recognition for her important contribution to nursing.
