Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Program

The AAN established Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) in 2000 with support from the John A. Hartford Foundation.

BAGNC’s main goals are to:

• Increase the cadre of academic geriatric nurses,
• Build leadership capacity in academic geriatric nurses, and
• Build national collaboration and excitement about geriatric nursing.

The initiative, which now has additional funding partners in The Atlantic Philanthropies and Mayday Fund, has four main components:

• Predoctoral BAGNC Scholarships ($100,000)
• Postdoctoral Claire M. Fagin Fellowships ($120,000)
• Nine Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence
• A Coordinating Center responsible for facilitating collaboration among the various components of the initiative

In its quest to prepare a workforce capable of providing quality care to all older Americans, BAGNC has to date awarded 239 scholarships and fellowships. These awardees are teaching the next generation of geriatric nurses and expanding the science through research programs.
