Policy Update

Ann Cashion, PhD, RN, FAAN, acting scientific director, NINR, was appointed to represent the National Institute of Nursing Research on the IOM Roundtable on Translating Genomic-Based Research for Health. The roundtable builds on current efforts across the scientific, medical, and public health communities to advance the translation of genomics-based research for health. Cashion joins Janet Williams, PhD, RN, FAAN, who represents the American Academy of Nursing on the roundtable.

Fellow Achievements

SarnaLinda Sarna, PhD, RN, FAAN, led the effort to make UCLA a tobacco-free campus, which is the first UC campus to do so. The new policy will positively affect the lives of over 70,000 people, including young adults and children.

Mary Lou Bond, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, FAAN, was appointed to the Fulbright Specialist Roster for work in mentorship and faculty development.
Colleen Conway-Welch, PhD, FAAN, CNM, after 28 years of service, is stepping down as dean of the Vanderbilt School of Nursing. She will continue to serve the nursing profession by teaching, lecturing, and shaping health policy.
Jane M. Kirschling, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Susan Dorsey, PhD, RN, FAAN were named to StateStats.org’s list of Top 18 Medical and Nursing Professors in Maryland.
Michael A. Carter, DNSc, DNP, FAAN, FNP/GNP-BC, was the commencement speaker at the George Washington University's School of Nursing.

Award Winning Fellows

Mary Fran Hazinski, MSN, RN, FAAN, FAHA, received the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses' Flame of Excellence Award.

Nancy O. DeBasio, PhD, RN, FAAN, received the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s 2012 Advocate of the Year award.

Carole Anderson, PhD, RN, FAAN, received Ohio State University's 2013 Distinguished Service Award.

Janice D. Crist, PhD, RN, FNGNA, FAAN was the Western Institute of Nursing Research 2013 winner of the WIN-Hartford Regional Nursing Research Award for an Experienced Researcher.

Linda A. Gerdner, PhD, RN, FAAN received the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Academy Staff

CEO Cheryl Sullivan announced that Jocelyn Cunic has been named Director, Member Engagement and Events for the Academy. Jocelyn joined the staff two years ago as the Membership Manager working with the Fellow Selection Committee, Nominating Committee, Expert Panels, and a number of task forces. Always putting customer service first, Jocelyn has excelled at exceeding expectations of Fellows. With her extensive prior professional experience as Sales Manager with Hyatt hotels, Jocelyn is uniquely qualified to direct all the planning activities for the policy conference and other Academy events.
