American Academy of NursingWhen a newborn is brought into this world, it is a wonderful occasion. Parents dream of their child walking for the first time, graduating from school, and starting their own family. Sadly, some parents will not realize such dreams.

Often overlooked and underfunded, pediatric palliative care is an important element in the US healthcare system. Properly prepared and trained healthcare professionals can help parents navigate through their worst nightmare: the death of their child.

Launched on April 16, this initiative seeks “to inspire, educate, and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning.” The Academy released a policy brief, “Advance Care Planning as an Urgent Public Health Concern,” (http://bit.ly/XIDYlg), urging for better policy on this important issue.

Although 71% of Americans have opinions and concerns on the care and treatment they may need in the event that they cannot speak for themselves and may be dependent on others to make decisions, only about 29% have completed an advance health care directive, allowing a loved-one the ability to speak on their behalf during health emergencies.
