Policy Updates
National Healthcare Decisions Day
The Academy's Palliative and End of Life Care Expert Panel wrote a policy brief with policy recommendations on this issue. A corresponding press release was issued.
Because advance care planning is important for people of all ages, the Academy issued a press release highlighting Edge Runner, Cynda Rushton, PhD, RN, FAAN, and the Harriet Lane Compassionate Care Program work on pediatric palliative care.
Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Mark Warner (D-VA) both included in the Congressional Record the importance of establishing a health care directive. In his remarks, Sen. Warner also noted the Academy's support.

When a newborn is brought into this world, it is a wonderful occasion. Parents dream of their child walking for the first time, graduating from school, and starting their own family. Sadly, some parents will not realize such dreams.
Often overlooked and underfunded, pediatric palliative care is an important element in the US healthcare system. Properly prepared and trained healthcare professionals can help parents navigate through their worst nightmare: the death of their child.
The American Academy of Nursing joined with over 122 national organizations to support the sixth annual Healthcare Decisions Day. Launched on April 16, this initiative seeks “to inspire, educate, and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning.” The Academy released a policy brief, “Advance Care Planning as an Urgent Public Health Concern,” (http://bit.ly/XIDYlg), urging for better policy on this important issue.

National Child Abuse Prevention Month
More than 676,000 children were found to be victims of maltreatment in 2011. At least 1,770 children died from maltreatment and abuse in 2009. Over 80 percent were under the age of four.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. While our obligation to protect children is year long, the American Academy of Nursing urges members of the healthcare community to evaluate and strengthen their initiatives to reduce child abuse.

The American Academy of Nursing encourages advance care planning and on-going conversations between individuals, family members, and health care providers to ensure that care and treatment provided reflects individual preferences and values for those with serious, progressive chronic or life-limiting illness.
Although 71% of Americans have opinions and concerns on the care and treatment they may need in the event that they cannot speak for themselves and may be dependent on others to make decisions, only about 29% have completed an advance health care directive, allowing a loved-one the ability to speak on their behalf during health emergencies.
